Here we will try to give you an overview of some of the new fetures implemented in FEM-Design new releases. However, not every single function will be listed here - for this we still recomend checking the releae notes and the new features guides.

Export|Import load to|from Clipboard

Postby StruSoft Iwona Budny » 10 May 2017, 12:54

FEM-Design 16.00.004

Since this service version of FEM-Design, it is possible to export and import loads to|from clipboard. The reason of introducing this feature is to provide faster way for loads modification. One can now modify the loads (in excel or text editor) and import them back to update the equivalent loads in the program.

Two new icons are available in the Loads tab, in the Clipboard panel:

What kind of loads can be exported to Clipboard?
Load types that can be exported to Clipboard:
- Point load
- Line load
- Surface load
- Line temperature variation load
- Surface temperature variation load
- Line stress load
- Surface stress load
- Point support motion load
- Line support motion load
- Surface support motion load

What is exported and what is the structure of the data in Clipboard?
Upon pressing 'Export' all loads from a given model are exported to clipboard with the following data:
- #Type
- GUID
- Case
- Comment
- Data numbers depending on the load type (load values)

The exported load types are sorted in the clipboard by their type (LDLINEFORCE, LDPOINTFORCE, LDSURFFORCE, LDSURFTEMP, etc.) because each load type contains different data numbers defining the actual load. An example on how the data is structured in the Clipboard is shown below. In this example data was pasted to Excel sheet (the color editing was added later and is not a part of the Export feature).

What can be updated?
Only Comment and the data numbers (load values) can be modified and updated upon importing the data from the Clipboard. Do not modify any other cells.

Important: The variable intensity of a surface load CAN NOT be achieved by manipulating the q1, q2 and q3 values from the Clipoard. The surface load requires a uniform load created first, before a variable intensity can be applied manually to specific points.

How to update loads?
In Excel or other text editing document, select the rows with loads you wish to update (it can be individual rows, or all of them but it is important to select the whole row along with all the data) and copy it (use Ctrl+c, File -> Copy, Copy to Clipboard, etc.). For example:

In Excel:

In Word:

In FEM-Design press the Import button. A dialog will appear with an information how many loads were updated.

Possible errors:
If one does not select the rows with loads properly (or type text as a load values), for example:

Image

that particular load(s) cannot be updated, and a following message will be shown in FEM-Design upon pressing Import (the content of this message is automatically added to Clipboard):

Image

Important: Only the load(s) defined in that bad row(s) is not updated.

What is the workflow?
1. In FEM-Design go to Loads tab and press Export (placed in Clipboard panel). Upon pressing Export, a dialog with a message that loads were sent to Clipboard is shown.
2. Open an Excel file, Word document, or any other text editor and paste the content of the Clipboard. It is not required to make any selection beforehand in Excel or text editor.
3. Modify the loads: only Comment and data numbers (load values) can be edited.
4. Select the row with loads you wish to import back to FEM-Design. Only properly selected rows can be imported to FEM-Design.
5. Copy the selection.
6. In FEM-Design go to Loads tab and press Import button (placed in Clipboard panel). A dialog with an information about the Import status will be shown.

Important, if you use Excel to edit the loads
- Use General format or Number format cells
- Do not use 1000 separator
- Make sure your Excel settings regarding decimal and thousand separators are compatible with your regional settings, otherwise the values from the clipboard may be misinterpreted when pasted to Excel.
---> The regional settings can be checked here: Control panel -> Clock, Language and Region -> Formats | Additional settings: Decimal symbol | Digit grouping symbol.
---> In Excel this can be set in: File -> Options -> Advanced: Decimal separator | Thousands separator.
